Who can be an apprentice
Anyone can be an apprentice and no prior qualifications are necessary. All we look for is potential, lots of potential. You may want to start a new career or you may prefer a more practical way of gaining professional qualifications than going to university, whatever your motive, we’d love the opportunity to help you grow.

Realise your future
During your apprenticeship, you’ll become a trusted local government officer, earn a wage (£12,579 per annum) and achieve a qualification while you do. Development will be at the heart of your role, and you’ll quickly gain a real insight into working with us. You’ll meet new people and learn all about the processes and information you need to start a career in that area. Local authorities like Sutton Council provide a wide array of services to the community, so there is plenty of room for growth.

About the role
We have a new and exciting apprenticeship opportunity within our Pensions Administration Service. In this role you will be responsible for helping deliver the day-to-day operation of our local government pension scheme. You will produce benefit quotations and other important processes, maintain our member records, and provide advice to our scheme members.

About you
We’re looking for someone that is happy working with numbers and has a keen eye for detail. They will be motivated, hard-working and have a real drive to succeed. We are especially interested in candidates with an eagerness to learn and to come up with innovative solutions.

Please note, in order to qualify for apprenticeship funding you must:
  • Be at least 16 years of age and not in full-time education.
  • Hold a GCSE level C or equivalent in Maths and English and be able to present original qualification certificates - if you do not hold these qualifications/certificates you must be committed to complete these via functional skills assessments as part of the apprenticeship.
  • Only apply for an apprenticeship unrelated to any qualifications they hold at the same or higher level than the apprenticeship they wish to apply for. The apprenticeship being applied for must be unrelated in subject and content from the qualification already held.
  • Not be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or another funded further education or higher education programme at the time you start your new apprenticeship.
  • Have the right to work and study in England and be one of the following:
  1. A citizen of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) or have the right to abode in the UK and have been resident in the EEA for at least the previous three years on the first day of your apprenticeship.
  2. A non-EEA citizen with permission from the UK government to live in the UK, (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of learning.
Our offer
Our apprenticeships are offered with 23 days paid annual leave, access to our online staff benefits portal (including discounts at local and national shops, restaurants and attractions), and a starting salary of £12,579 per annum. You will also obtain an industry-recognised qualification.

We’re extremely proud of our apprenticeship scheme and the achievements of our apprentices, many of whom have secured permanent employment with the Council and continue to excel in their careers.

In addition there are further discounts available to apprentices and more information can be found at the Apprentice Extra website and Apprenticeship Connect website.

Rather than a typical interview, the shortlisted candidates will be asked to take part in an online assessment and then have a chat with one of the service’s former apprentices and the Head of Service. This will give you the opportunity to showcase your skills and to demonstrate why you think that you’re the best candidate.

Sutton Council is a Disability Confident Employer. More information about apprenticeships can be found on the National Apprenticeship website.

Closing date for applications - Wednesday 1st July 2020
Assessment date - To be confirmed, will be conducted virtually in line with Government Guidance in relation to COVID-19
